How Percentage Is Calculated

Percentage = (Part / Whole) × 100. Percentage change = ((New - Old) / Old) × 100. To find X% of a number, multiply the number by X/100.

percentOf = (value1/value2)*100
percentChange = ((value2-value1)/|value1|)*100
valueFromPercent = value2*(percentageValue/100)
difference = value2 - value1
Where:
value1, value2, percentageValue are independent user inputs (defaults 25, 100, 50)
Assumptions:
percentChange uses absolute value of value1 in the denominator (so result sign reflects direction even if value1 is negative)
Division-by-zero guarded by returning 0 instead of Infinity/NaN

Key Takeaways

  • •To find what percent A is of B: (A ÷ B) × 100
  • •To calculate a percentage increase: ((New - Old) ÷ Old) × 100
  • •To find X% of a number: Number × (X ÷ 100)
  • •A 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does NOT return to the original value
  • •Percentage points ≠ percent change (5% to 10% is 5 percentage points but a 100% increase)
